« Powered by Bing™ ».

Fake Chinese Apple store has even staff fooled

Fakes, Chinese, Apple
Yahoo reported today that China's passion for iPads and iPhones has triggered widespread cloning and even brawls. Now, it has gone further with a fake Apple store so convincing even the staff think they work for Steve Jobs.

The store, in the southwestern city of Kunming, was uncovered by an American blogger who was initially fooled, before she noticed not everything was as it seemed.

At first glance, the signs, computers and layout of the shop all look exactly like a genuine Apple store, says the blogger, who posts under the name BirdAbroad.

Photos posted by the blogger show the employees wearing Apple's trademark blue T-shirts with name badges hanging around their necks.

But a closer look reveals the winding stairs going up to the chill-out area are poorly made, the walls have not been painted well, and the shopfront sign says "Apple Store" whereas the real deal just sports the now-famous fruit logo.

The employees, meanwhile, all genuinely believe they work for Apple, said BirdAbroad, who asked to remain anonymous when contacted by AFP on Thursday.

What Will Google Plus Google Places Equal?

How Google+ Could Become A Killer Local Marketing Channel

The Places Stream

One day, we are all going to wake up and find “Places” as a default stream in our Google+ experience and a business’ “Plus” stream as part of the default Place Page experience. When this happens, it will be like local search chocolate meeting social media peanut butter.

  • Circle Your Customers

In some ways, Google+ Circles are no big thing. Numerous social nets, including Facebook, have allowed members to categorize their contacts, but most have failed at convincing people that it’s worth doing (see Exhibit A).

  • Customers Circle Your Business

  • Local Interest Circles Right now.

  • Social Adwords

  • Single dashboard

  • Place Pages Become Truly Social

  • Messages to add to a Circle and/or to join the business’ Circle.

  • Businesses with claimed Place Pages to your Circle.

Google's playable Les Paul guitar doodle cost businesses around the world £166m in lost productivity

Strum away an hour or two: The interactive Les Paul Google Doodle released last week ended up costing businesses around the world £166million in lost productivity

The Google guitar doodle marking Les Paul's birthday last week cost the world £166million in lost productivity.

The late guitar pioneer was celebrated on what would have been his 96th birthday with his own playable doodle.

Anyone logging onto the Google homepage on June 9 and 10 would have seen the authentic-sounding doodle above the search box and could have strummed away using either their mouse or keyboard.

The company spent just £9,300 on the design but, according to website Extreme Tech, this small investment ended up costing a staggering £166million as office workers took time off to play the interactive 'guitar'.

Workers spent a total of 10.7million hours distracted by the doodle, the weblog said.

Taiwan computer makers plot against Apple

Taipei, Taiwan

It’s the Disney of computer shows. The possibility of something once thought impossible coming true hangs above the maze of gaudy booths and dazzling displays of electronic gadgetry slated for to go on sale in the second half of the year.

There are tablet PCs with detachable keyboards – easier for typing than the usual touch screen – laptops with built-in speakers as powerful as an external setup and half-phone, half-computer handheld devices with 3D displays.

Tech firms from across the world come with showgirls to vie for the attention of corporate buyers, among the 36,000 people expected at the show. A fantasy fulfilled could be a lucrative deal to install microchips in a PC maker’s latest gadgets or finding a bulk buyer of portable computers designed for business use.

The show, Computex Taipei, also serves another purpose: To demonstrate the growing depth and sophistication of Taiwan's high-tech industry. Taiwanese companies hope to show how far they've moved from the days when "Taiwanese electronics" meant contract manufacturing for overseas brands.

But for many Taiwanese vendors, this years Computex, which ended on June 4, was a disappointment. Their Silicon Valley rival Apple Computer had stolen the show.

Rather than enjoying the glitz and glam, Micro-Star International Vice President Henry Lu sat stoically, his necktie loose, in a private conference room pondering one question: What are we going to do about the iPad?

Just outside, his sales people were showing off the Taiwanese firm’s tiny tablet computers, barely one percent of the company’s overall notebook PC business. But Apple’s hot selling touch-screen tablets, the iPads, were getting most of the attention.

Microsoft officially unveils Windows 8

Microsoft-Windows-8-previewMicrosoft has officially unveiled some key new features of its forthcoming operating system. The next-generation OS, which may or may not be called “Windows 8” (its “internal code-name”), delivers a completely re-imagined user interface, with a heavy emphasis on touch-based functionality that takes a hefty helping of inspiration from the Windows Phone UI.

One of the first major design changes from previous Windows versions is the completely overhauled Windows Start menu, which has been replaced with a colorful tiled design that evokes the Exposé screen of Firefox, or other similar quick-screen-navigation features found in most new web browsers. Rather than web pages, however, the new Start screen shows both static program icons and widgets, called “live tiles,” which provide constant notifications and updates. Windows 8 also allows users to access all the files on their computer in the same visualized way that programs are accessed, which helps make the OS easy to navigate with touch alone.

Lockheed Martin hit with 'significant and tenacious' cyber attack

Lockheed Martin says it was attacked by hackers, but managed to fend off the cyber assault.

The world's largest defense contractor said Saturday it fought off a "tenacious" cyber attack last week.
Lockheed Martin Corp , the Pentagon 's No. 1 supplier, said in a statementit detected a "significant" assault on its computer networks on May 21. It was found "almost immediately"and no employee, program or customer data was lost, the company said in a statement.

The Department of Homeland Security said it knew about the "cyber incident," and was investigating alongside the Department of Defense .
The agencies are"determining the extent of the incident, performing analysis of available data in order to provide recommendations to mitigate further risk," said Chris Ortman , a spokesman for the agency.
Lockheed uses a mobile security system produced by EMC Corp .’s RSA unit. RSA bolstered security for clients, including Lockheed, after a network breach in March resulted in the theft of RSA data, a person familiar with the process said.

Weapons makers are the latest companies to be breached through sophisticated attacks that have pierced the defenses of huge corporations including Sony and Google .
Rick Moy, president of NSS Labs , an information security company, said the original attack on RSA was likely targeted at its customers, including military, financial, governmental and other organizations with critical intellectual property.
He said the initial RSA attackwas followed by malware and phishing campaigns seeking specific data that would link tokens to end-users, which meant the current attacks may have been carried out by the same hackers.
"Given the military targets, and that millions of compromised keys are in circulation, this is not over," he said.
